Variable Description
The offence defined for remand periods by most serious code offence and for aggregate sentences by longest time.
Offence is defined by the Ministry of Justice as ‘an act or omission that one may be prosecuted for and punished under the criminal law’.
Offence classifications are derived from Police codes and classifications; where there is more than one offence, “most serious offence” ranking is made using Ministry of Justice “seriousness of offence scale”.
Note: The codes provided in the right-hand column provide the overall offence codes and their matching categories. However, please check the ov_offence_dim metadata table for specific codes, as codes do not always match these categories. For example, most 1### codes are for violence, but a subset of 1### codes are categorised as other types of offences: 1748 Blackmail is listed as a Disorderly Conduct code despite having a 1### code.
