Variable Description
The country which issued the passport a passenger is travelling on. Passengers can hold passports for more than one country, but only the passport used at the border is counted. (Collected for all passengers)
Variable Notes
For continuity, the current name of a country is used for historic data, even if it had a different name in the past.
"The United Kingdom" also includes the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. "The United Kingdom" is British Isles before 1935.
"Ireland" includes Northern Ireland from 1935 to 1941. In all years, Ireland includes undefined Ireland, which may include Northern Ireland.
"Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro" – Yugoslavia to August 2003, Serbia and Montenegro from September 2003.
"Germany" includes Austria from 1939 to 1946, and excludes East Germany (Democratic Republic of Germany) from 1965 to 1990.
"Cook Islands" includes Niue from 1938 to 1970.
"India" includes Pakistan in 1942 and 1948.
"Malaysia" is Straits Settlements from 1935 to 1947, and Malaya from 1948 to 1965. "Malaysia" includes Singapore from 1935 to 1948.
"Papua New Guinea" is British New Guinea from 1938 to 1949.
"French Polynesia" is Society Islands from 1935 to 1971.
"United States of America" excludes Hawaii and Alaska before 1959.
