Involves the identification of various aspects of New Zealand or New Zealanders. It can comprise of characteristics such as language, traditions, beliefs, civic values, common myths or symbols. The characteristics that come to be a part of a nation's identity are strongly shaped by what distinguishes it from other nations. Despite a national identity being collectively shared, the perceived characteristics of this identity and how they are prioritised may differ. Characteristics/attributes of national identity - are phenomena that contributes towards developing and sustaining a national identity that distinguishes the nation from other entities. Phenomena could include physical attributes, symbols, historical events and characteristics associated with people such as values, language and activities.
