Population estimates
The population estimates used to create the mapped data is the ‘Estimated Resident Population for Regional Council Areas, at 30 June’ (available from Infoshare).
The population at 30 June 2013 is based on the 2013 Census usually resident population count, updated for residents missed or counted more than once by the census (net census undercount); residents temporarily overseas on census night; and births, deaths, and net migration between census night and the date of the estimate.
Subnational estimates at 30 June 2014–17 were obtained by updating the base population at 30 June 2013 of each area for births, deaths, and net migration.
These estimates do not include tourists and other short-term visitors.
