A national birth, death and marriage registration service has been operating in New Zealand since the 1840s and is administered by the Registrar-General under the auspices of the Department of Internal Affairs. The Registrar-General is responsible for the compilation, maintenance and preservation of a national genealogical record and provision of a certificate service.
