Variable Description

Name
[cen_ind_language6_line_code] en-NZ
Label
CEN Language Spoken Group6 Line Code en-NZ
Description

Lists the line code for the sixth language spoken by an individual if applicable, and is otherwise null.

Language spoken provides information on which languages, and how many, a person can speak or use. This includes New Zealand Sign Language.

The Standard Classification of Language is used whenever statistics are collected on languages spoken by the New Zealand population.

Language is a hierarchical classification with three levels. Level 1 has 28 categories, level 2 has 47 categories while level 3 has 194 categories.

A person can list speaking more than one language.

Note: Line code variables are linked to the actual responses in the synonym files. These are applicable for detailed analysis of language(s) spoken. For example, a person might give regional dialects as languages spoken which all fall under the same census language classification code but each would have different line codes. All line codes should be in Aria.
