Description
For the GSS, deprivation, or lack of 'activities and facilities which are customary, or at least widely encouraged and approved, in the societies to which people belong', will be measured by components of a respondents standard of living. The components that will be used to measure peoples standard of living are as follows:
- Ownership restrictions
- Social participation restrictions
- Economising
- Self-ratings Low standard of living can be characterised by poor access to resources, an inability to socialise with other and having to economise on many day to day activities. People with high standard of living are distinguished by having access to all the possessions they want, by having the ability to socialise in many varied ways and with little need to economise on day-to-day activities. The GSS is interested in peoples wellbeing. (ELSI 2000)
