Description
Regional councils were established in November 1989 by the Local Government Commission. These regional councils (16 in total) cover every territorial authority in New Zealand with the exception of the Chatham Island District. Generally regional councils contain complete territorial authorities. The geographical boundaries of the regions conform as far as practical to the boundaries of one or more water catchments. In determining regions, consideration was also given to regional communities of interest, natural resource management, land use planning, port facilities and environmental matters.
