Abstract

On 14 November 2016, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck near Kaikōura. The earthquake caused slips that closed many roads in the area, including State Highway 1 and the Inland Kaikōura Road – isolating the district.

Using administrative data, we created a time series of sales in the Kaikōura township, and a set of maps indicating where sales increased, decreased, or remained the same across the upper South Island after the November quakes.
